Torn from her dream of marine biology and shattered by the recent murder of her father, Nina finds herself ensnared by the increasingly strange clientele of the family private eye business—a mystery that begins to unravel when Lakeisha Wells terminates her contract with Nina to find her missing son, Terrence.

Somewhere in Brooklyn , an anomalous silver locket said to bring misfortune to all who possess it is the key to solving this crime.

Now connected to the case in a way she doesn’t understand, Nina slips into a strange world of phantoms and fanatics in what should've been a simple case of kidnapping, if Lakeisha didn’t think the kidnapper was already dead.

This mystery has an overlay of paranormal. I liked Nina's character. She's a strong female lead who's determined to get to the bottom of this mystery. Not a lot seems to throw her off, and that makes her interesting. I wasn't as fond of some of the other characters in the book, however. I felt some were inconsistent in their speech patterns and in some of their actions. I did feel like I could get a grip on many of these characters to some extent, which speaks to the details used to describe them, but they still didn't feel very "real" to me. They felt more like their ghostly cohorts; visible, but somehow not quite tangible. The relationships between them struck me as similarly amorphous. Characters that had just met seemed to already have a familiarity, and it sometimes felt like I was supposed to already have additional information to make all the connections Nina was able to make.

In spite of what I felt were shortcomings in the story, I wanted to keep reading to the end. I wanted to find out how the story would come to a conclusion. I can't say I loved the ending, but I didn't hate it either. It just left me a bit befuddled, like the rest of the book. I didn't have really strong feelings about the book one way or the other. It was interesting and kept my attention enough to get me to the end, but I wasn't really engaged in it. When I factor in the need for further editing for typos/substitutions as well as some sentence structure revisions, I give this:

A more riveting book I have not read - once I started reading, I just could not stop until I reached the end. Jamel J. Paul is masterful in his web of mystery, building up the suspense that leads to a stunning ending. "The Phantom's Fixation" worked on me - I was spellbound and glued to the book from beginning to end, not wanting to let it go or even pay attention to what was going on around me. Mr. Paul has a very eloquent flow to his writing, which to me ranks up with some of the best mystery writers I could think of - being a fan of mysteries myself, his books remind me a lot of Sue Grafton's detective series. "The Phantom's Fixation" also reminded me a lot of one of my childhood favorites - the Three Investigators, influenced by Alfred Hitchcock.

There is a complex talent that goes into creating a story that rivets the reader and sucks them in such that you keep turning page after page after page - Mr. Paul has achieved that in "The Phantom's Fixation". With each passing chapter, you are drawn more and more into the mystery and the suspense - and like any great mystery novel will do, this novel also includes a surprise twist in the ending, which definitely was unexpected. By the end of the book, all loose ends were wrapped up - no cliffhangers, no feelings of "I wonder what happened..."

I simply cannot speak highly enough about this novel - you are very quickly drawn into the world of Nina Davidson, who investigates a mysterious child abduction that turns out to have a personal connection to Nina herself. The story is very tastefully written, with an epic climax and resolution at the end that is simply not to be missed. If you are in any way a fan of mystery, suspense or the supernatural - this is most definitely the book for you! Kudos to Mr. Paul for developing a masterpiece worthy of becoming a best-seller!
The Phantom's Fixation turned out to be a great mystery find, for both myself and my younger sisters who love mystery reads with a twist. There were a couple times that I thought elements of the story were not going to work, or was confused for a minute, but I love how all of those threads were quickly worked into the story-- and done so well. This is what really made Phantom's Fixation a great read for myself, and so exciting for my younger sisters.

I loved the main character, Nina, which was why I let my sisters read the book-- good strong female characters are always hard to find! And even the minor characters in the story were well thought out and developed. I would totally recommend this read for anyone that loves a good mystery, reads with a twist, YA readers, as well as adults. It turned out to be the perfect read for our day in!
